State of Play (2011)
A new photographic series on Obama’s Presidency (2009 -)
'Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.
She was born just a generation past slavery …. when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin…. she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot…she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote…'
Senator Barack Obama, Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois, after winning the race for the White House - victory speech – 4th November 2008.
I created these photographs as tableaux vivants and as acts of respect. The media archive of Obama’s image online is experienced remotely but here it is as a person re-imagined with ‘permeable skin, penetrated by sounds, smells and memories that are sharp and diffuse, histories public and private’ (McGrath, 2007, p.40). Here, this body recognises what has been laboured off stage. She attempts to recall and re-play different narratives of such historical moments.
